P6 vs P8 vs P10 Outdoor LED Display: Which Pixel Pitch Fits 10 m, 20 m and 50 m Viewing Distances?
Short answer: Start with the closest real viewer position, then compare it with the documented minimum viewing distance of each LED configuration. Uniview LED RK-series configuration data lists 7 m for RK6.67 (6.667 mm), 8 m for RK8.0 (8 mm) and 10 m for RK10.0 (10 mm). At 10 m, all three reach or exceed their documented minimums, but P6.67 provides the largest distance margin and the highest pixel density. At 20 m, all three are comfortably beyond their documented minimum viewing distances, so content detail, required resolution and budget become more important. At 50 m, P10 can be an efficient starting point for large-format content, while P8 or P6.67 may still be justified if the same display must also serve closer viewers or higher-detail content.
Naming note: the current Uniview LED RK configuration sheet documents 6.667 mm, not exactly 6.000 mm. If a tender simply says “P6,” confirm whether the project actually requires RK6.67 or another approximately 6 mm product.
Scope of this guide: This article covers outdoor fixed LED display planning using documented Uniview LED RK-series figures on the shared 960 × 960 mm cabinet. For shorter viewing distances, see What Pixel Pitch Is Best for 2 m, 3 m, 5 m, or 10 m Viewing Distance?. For the basic relationship between pitch and viewing distance, see the LED Display Viewing Distance Guide. To convert a selected pitch into native screen resolution, use How to Calculate LED Wall Resolution.
Quick comparison: P6.67 vs P8 vs P10 by viewing distance
Use the closest position where an important viewer can actually stand, stop or pass. Do not base the pixel-pitch decision only on the average or furthest viewing distance.
| Primary audience distance | Practical starting point | When to consider a finer pitch | What the Uniview data confirms |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 m Street level, storefront, transit, concourse |
RK6.67 when image detail and close viewing are important | RK8 can also be evaluated for large graphics and short headline content. RK10 should be checked carefully because 10 m equals its documented minimum viewing distance. | Minimum viewing distance: RK6.67 = 7 m; RK8 = 8 m; RK10 = 10 m |
| 20 m Plaza, forecourt, mid-distance DOOH |
RK8 is a useful middle configuration for comparison | Consider RK6.67 when the screen must display more detail or also serve closer viewers. Consider RK10 when content is dominated by large-format graphics and the required native resolution remains sufficient. | All three configurations are beyond their documented minimum viewing distances |
| 50 m Highway, rooftop, tall façade, long-range DOOH |
RK10 can be an efficient starting point for large-format content | Consider RK8 or RK6.67 if important viewers also approach much closer, or if the physical screen dimensions require a higher native pixel count. | At the same physical screen area, finer pitch provides more pixels; the RK specification itself does not define an “optimal” pitch for 50 m |
“Practical starting point” is editorial project guidance, not a Uniview LED product specification. Final selection should consider the closest viewer, screen dimensions, native resolution, content, brightness and installation conditions together.
Three different viewing-distance questions — do not mix them up
A single distance cannot answer every LED display design question. Separate these three concepts before selecting a pitch:
- Documented minimum viewing distance: the product-specific figure published in the Uniview LED configuration sheet. For the RK configurations covered here, it is 7 m for RK6.67, 8 m for RK8 and 10 m for RK10.
- Actual project viewing distance: where people can physically stand or pass relative to the display. The closest important viewing position is normally the more useful design input.
- Content legibility distance: how far away a particular headline, number, logo or graphic remains usable. This cannot be determined by pixel pitch alone because character size, screen dimensions, luminance, contrast and content design also matter.
Useful first-pass relationship:
Pixel pitch is stated in millimeters, while Uniview LED publishes a separate minimum viewing-distance value for each RK configuration.
RK6.67: 6.667 mm pitch → documented minimum viewing distance 7 m
RK8.0: 8 mm pitch → documented minimum viewing distance 8 m
RK10.0: 10 mm pitch → documented minimum viewing distance 10 m
Use the published product figure in a tender rather than converting a generic rule of thumb into a manufacturer specification.

Why pixel density matters as much as viewing distance
Minimum viewing distance tells you whether a particular configuration meets a published product criterion at the closest audience position. It does not tell you how many pixels the complete wall will contain.
22,500 dots/m²
15,625 dots/m²
10,000 dots/m²
For the same physical display area, RK6.67 contains 44% more pixels per square meter than RK8 and 125% more than RK10. RK8 contains 56.25% more pixels per square meter than RK10. Whether those extra pixels provide useful project value depends on screen dimensions, content resolution and the range of viewing positions.
Pixel budget: physical size required for a 1920 × 1080 pixel canvas
Another way to compare pitches is to hold native resolution constant. The following calculations show the theoretical physical dimensions required for 1920 × 1080 pixels at each pitch before the dimensions are adjusted to fit the actual 960 × 960 mm cabinet grid.
| Pixel pitch | Width for 1920 px | Height for 1080 px | Theoretical area |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.667 mm | ≈ 12.80 m | ≈ 7.20 m | ≈ 92.2 m² |
| 8 mm | 15.36 m | 8.64 m | ≈ 132.7 m² |
| 10 mm | 19.20 m | 10.80 m | ≈ 207.4 m² |
Editorial calculation: pixel count × pixel pitch. These dimensions are not cabinet layouts; the final RK wall must use whole 960 × 960 mm cabinets.
Choosing an outdoor LED pixel pitch for a 10 m audience
At 10 m, RK6.67 provides the largest documented viewing-distance margin of the three. Its minimum viewing distance is 7 m, compared with an actual 10 m viewer position.
RK8 is also above its documented minimum. The configuration sheet lists 8 m, so a 10 m position is 2 m beyond that value. This makes RK8 a legitimate configuration to evaluate where content is dominated by larger graphics, video and short text.
RK10 reaches its published minimum at exactly 10 m. That does not automatically make it unsuitable, but it provides no additional distance margin relative to the published value. For content with small text or fine details, compare the complete screen resolution before finalizing the pitch.
Detailed content at around 10 m?
A finer outdoor configuration may also be worth evaluating. Uniview LED documentation lists FlexR-UO3.9 at 3.906 mm with a 4 m minimum viewing distance. Available documentation also lists outdoor brightness configurations of 3,200, 4,500 and 5,500 cd/m² after calibration.
Choosing an outdoor LED pixel pitch for a 20 m audience
At 20 m, RK6.67, RK8 and RK10 are all beyond their documented minimum viewing distances. This means the purchasing discussion can move from a simple distance check to the actual pixel budget.
- RK6.67: highest pixel density of the three at 22,500 dots/m². Consider it when the same wall must also serve closer viewers or when higher native resolution is important.
- RK8: middle option at 15,625 dots/m². It is useful as a reference configuration when balancing total resolution against pitch.
- RK10: 10,000 dots/m². It can be evaluated for large-format outdoor content where the calculated wall resolution is sufficient for the media plan.
The correct answer therefore depends on the screen dimensions. A 20 m viewing distance by itself does not prove that P8—or any other pitch—is universally optimal.
Choosing an outdoor LED pixel pitch for a 50 m audience
At 50 m, all three RK configurations are far beyond their documented minimum viewing distances. P10 therefore becomes a logical efficiency benchmark for long-range, large-format content because it provides the lowest pixel density of the three while retaining the same RK cabinet platform.
That does not mean P8 or P6.67 is automatically unnecessary. A façade may have viewers at 50 m and another important audience zone at 10–20 m. A screen may also need a specific native resolution because of its physical dimensions and content format. In those projects, the closer viewer or required pixel count can justify the finer pitch.
For text and information viewed at long distance, pixel pitch is only one variable. Character height, content layout, luminance and display contrast also affect usability. The CIE defines luminance contrast ratio for a display as the quotient of the luminances of two active parts of the display surface.
Worked example: a 9.6 m × 4.8 m outdoor LED wall
Consider a wall using 10 cabinets horizontally and 5 vertically. With the RK 960 × 960 mm cabinet, the installation uses 50 cabinets and covers 46.08 m². The physical dimensions, cabinet count, nominal cabinet weight and documented per-cabinet power remain the same across these three RK pitches; native resolution changes.
| Item | RK6.67 | RK8.0 | RK10.0 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native resolution | 1,440 × 720 px | 1,200 × 600 px | 960 × 480 px |
| Total pixels | 1,036,800 | 720,000 | 460,800 |
| Cabinet count | 50 | 50 | 50 |
| Maximum power — standard brightness | 31.5 kW | 31.5 kW | 31.5 kW |
| Average power — standard brightness | 11.5 kW | 11.5 kW | 11.5 kW |
| Nominal cabinet weight total | 1,375 kg | 1,375 kg | 1,375 kg |
Editorial calculations from the documented RK values: 50 × 630 W maximum, 50 × 230 W average and 50 × 27.5 kg. HB variants calculate to 36 kW maximum and 12 kW average for the same 50-cabinet wall. Structural design must also account for mounting steelwork and site-specific loads not provided by this product table.
Per-cabinet values converted to per-square-meter values
The RK configuration sheet gives power, heat and weight primarily on a per-cabinet basis. One 960 × 960 mm cabinet covers 0.9216 m², allowing the following project-planning conversions.
| Documented value per cabinet | Editorial conversion per m² |
|---|---|
| 630 W maximum | ≈ 684 W/m² |
| 230 W average | ≈ 250 W/m² |
| 720 W maximum — HB | ≈ 781 W/m² |
| 240 W average — HB | ≈ 260 W/m² |
| 2,148 BTU/pcs | ≈ 2,331 BTU/h/m² |
| 784 BTU/pcs average | ≈ 851 BTU/h/m² |
| 27.5 kg/pcs | ≈ 29.8 kg/m² |
Conversion: documented per-cabinet value ÷ 0.9216 m². These per-square-meter figures are editorial calculations rather than values printed in the RK configuration sheet.
Within these documented RK configurations, the three pitches share the same standard per-cabinet power and nominal cabinet weight. The published high-brightness configuration changes the power figures, while changing pitch primarily changes pixel density and native resolution.
Procurement checklist before you fix the pixel pitch
- Measure the closest important viewer position. Do not select pitch only from an average viewing distance.
- List the content types. Separate large-format video and graphics from small text, numerical information and detail-critical content.
- Calculate the complete native resolution. Combine the physical screen dimensions with the selected pitch before approving the media specification.
- Fit the screen to the cabinet grid. The RK configurations covered here use a 960 × 960 mm cabinet, so final dimensions should use whole cabinets unless another structure is specifically engineered.
- Confirm the brightness configuration. The referenced RK sheet lists 7,000 cd/m² standard and 10,000 cd/m² HB, both stated as “No Calibration.” Do not present those numbers as after-calibration values.
- Check power from the original per-cabinet figure. Standard configuration is documented at 630/230 W maximum/average per cabinet; HB is 720/240 W.
- Confirm structural loads. The cabinet specification provides product weight, but site-specific wind, seismic, mounting-frame and foundation design require separate engineering.
- Confirm service access. RK documentation lists front and rear maintenance. Decide the service method before the supporting structure and access space are finalized.
- Confirm environmental requirements. The referenced configuration lists −20 °C to +50 °C operation and IP65 front / IP54 rear. IP Code classification is defined by IEC 60529.
- Confirm destination-market compliance. The RK configuration sheet lists CE/FCC/ETL, but the exact compliance documents required for the destination and project should be verified before procurement.
Where P6.67, P8 and P10 sit in the Uniview LED outdoor range
The Uniview LED RK family documented here provides 6.667 mm, 8 mm and 10 mm configurations on the same 960 × 960 × 88 mm cabinet platform, with front and rear maintenance, IP65/IP54 protection and standard or high-brightness configurations.
Because the three pitches share the same cabinet dimensions and documented standard per-cabinet power and weight, a project team can compare the effect of pixel pitch primarily through native resolution and pixel density while keeping many mechanical assumptions consistent.
For a project around 10 m with detail-critical content, also evaluate finer outdoor pitch options. For long-range façades dominated by large graphics, P10 can serve as an efficient comparison baseline. For more background, see the LED Display Viewing Distance Guide, Pixel Pitch and Viewing Distance Guide, and LED Wall Power Consumption Guide.

View the Outdoor RK Pro SeriesThree questions to answer before choosing P6, P8 or P10
- What is the closest important viewing position? Compare that distance with the documented minimum viewing distance of the exact configuration rather than using only the average audience distance.
- What native resolution does the finished screen actually need? Calculate it from the real wall dimensions and pixel pitch, then compare it with the content plan.
- Does the project also have closer secondary viewers? A screen primarily seen from 50 m may still require a finer pitch if an important audience also approaches to 10–20 m.
